In cases where it is not, you will have to choose as not doing either is not the remedy. If you can't find a compromise, then schedule something else as soon/close to the event as possible. If one of them has a history of not understanding or cranking, making you feel guilty or uncomfortable, do not tell them of your forced choice but rather just render a plausible excuse and miss the event from the jump.
