Nail this one down by focusing ONLY on the core issues, addressing them and 'dragging them out into the bright light of day'. Flushing out the truth and confronting and organized version is your best bet. Face it 'head on' and you'll be the one 'in control' especially IF in-laws, spouse or Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio or 'others who may have been using poor judgment' have been perpetuating the problem thus far. I do not suggest that there has been a 'bad person afoot' here: only that there MAY have been some poor decisions, poor choices and bad timing made by good people with good intentions.
